Arrival and Cusco City Tour
Airport pickup · City tour from about 1:30 pm, 5 h · Overnight: Cusco (3,400 m) · Meals: none We meet you at Cusco airport and take you to your hotel to rest and drink coca tea. In the afternoon, the city tour starts at Qoricancha, the Inca Temple of the Sun, whose perfect stone walls still stand under a Spanish convent. Next comes the Cathedral on the main square, with its colonial paintings, before you drive up to Sacsayhuamán, the fortress of giant zigzag walls above the city. The tour ends at three smaller sites: the carved rock shrine of Q'enqo, the checkpoint of Puka Pukara and the water temple of Tambomachay.
Chinchero, Moray and Maras
Pickup around 8:00 am · Overnight: Sacred Valley hotel (about 2,900 m) · Meals: breakfast, lunch In Chinchero, a village of weavers on the high plain, you see how wool is spun, dyed with plants and woven by hand. At Moray, giant circular terraces sink into the earth; scholars believe the Incas used them to study crops at different temperatures. Nearby, thousands of salt pools step down the mountainside at Maras, still worked by local families as in Inca times. After lunch in the valley, you check in at your hotel, lower and warmer than Cusco.
Pisac or Ollantaytambo and the train
Morning visit · Afternoon train · Overnight: hotel in Aguas Calientes · Meals: breakfast A morning visit of Pisac, with its sweeping terraces and craft market, or of the Ollantaytambo fortress, according to your train time. In the afternoon you board the train down the Urubamba canyon to Aguas Calientes.
Machu Picchu
Bus from about 6:00 am · 2–2.5 h guided visit · Return to Cusco or the airport in the evening · Meals: breakfast An early bus takes you to Machu Picchu for your guided visit of the citadel. In the afternoon you take the train to Ollantaytambo and a transfer to your Cusco hotel, or to the airport for an evening flight. This version gives the Sacred Valley two days, which sets it apart from the 3-day tour (F2).
