Machu Picchu Tours: Frequently Asked Questions

Practical answers for tickets, tours, transport and planning your visit.

Booking and payment

How far in advance should I book?

Book fixed-date Inca Trail trips and high-season visits several months ahead. Availability depends on permits, entrance circuits and train inventory.

How do I book with Machu-Picchu.tours?

Send our local team your travel dates, group size and preferred itinerary. We check availability and send the booking and payment steps.

When do I pay, and when are tickets issued?

Your written quote explains whether a deposit or full payment is required. After payment, we arrange applicable tickets and permits in each traveler’s name and send confirmation.

Can I cancel or change my travel date?

Terms vary because permits and tickets may be personal or non-refundable. Review the conditions in your quote before paying; our team will explain any available changes.

What payment methods can I use?

Available methods and any processing fees are listed in your quote. Ask the team to confirm the options for your booking before making a payment.

Choosing a tour

What is the difference between a full-day and 2-day tour?

A full-day tour is a long day with road and train connections. A 2-day itinerary includes an overnight in Aguas Calientes and separates some of the travel from the visit.

Can I book a private Machu Picchu guide?

Yes. A licensed guide can focus on your party. Depending on availability, you can add the official entrance ticket and round-trip shuttle bus.

What is included in a Machu Picchu tour?

Inclusions vary by itinerary. Your quote identifies transport, train class, entrance ticket, shuttle bus, guiding, accommodation and meals that are included.

Can you tailor a Peru itinerary?

Yes. Share your dates, interests and preferred pace. The team can suggest a route connecting Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and other destinations.

Tickets and circuits

Do I need to buy a Machu Picchu ticket in advance?

Yes, advance booking is strongly recommended, especially for peak dates and popular circuits. Entry is controlled by named tickets and timed slots.

Which Machu Picchu circuit should I choose?

The best route depends on your priorities and current availability. Circuit 2 is a popular first-visit option when available; check the route shown on your ticket.

Can I change the name or date on my ticket?

Ticket changes depend on current government rules and availability. Check every traveler’s passport details before purchase because changes may not be possible.

Can I visit Huayna Picchu as well?

Huayna Picchu requires a separate ticket and a specific entry time. Places are limited, so request it early and allow additional hiking time.

Trains and transport

How do I get from Cusco to Machu Picchu?

Most visitors travel by road to a Sacred Valley station, take a train to Aguas Calientes, then ride the shuttle bus to the entrance.

Where does the train to Machu Picchu leave from?

The departure station depends on your service and date. Ollantaytambo is a common starting point; your confirmed itinerary states the station and transfer plan.

How much luggage can I take on the train?

Train baggage rules vary by operator and service. A small overnight bag is usually practical; confirm the current allowance on your ticket and leave large luggage at your hotel.

What happens if a train is delayed or cancelled?

Follow the train operator’s instructions and contact your tour team. The available response depends on the disruption, road conditions and remaining transport capacity.

Inca Trail and treks

How difficult is the Classic Inca Trail?

It is a challenging multi-day trek with long climbs, stone steps and a high mountain pass. Acclimatization and preparation are important.

Can I hike the Inca Trail independently?

No. The regulated Inca Trail requires an authorized operator, an assigned permit and an approved support team.

How far in advance should I book the Inca Trail?

For May to August, request permits 6–8 months ahead; for April and September to November, about 4 months; and for December, January and March, about 2 months. The trail is closed in February. Availability is not confirmed until the permit is secured.

Is there an alternative if Inca Trail permits are sold out?

Options may include the Short Inca Trail or another trek such as Salkantay or Lares. Routes, difficulty and availability differ.

Altitude, health and preparation

How high is Cusco compared with Machu Picchu?

Cusco is around 3,400 m above sea level and Machu Picchu is about 2,430 m. Travelers can feel altitude effects in Cusco even though the citadel is lower.

How many days should I spend in Cusco before trekking?

Allow time to rest and acclimatize before strenuous activity. The right amount varies by person; discuss health concerns with a medical professional before travel.

What should I pack for Machu Picchu?

Bring your original passport, a small daypack, water, sun protection, a rain layer and comfortable shoes. Conditions change, so pack layers.

Is Machu Picchu suitable for children or older travelers?

Many families and older travelers visit, but routes include uneven stone paths and stairs. Consider mobility, altitude, heat and the length of the travel day when choosing an itinerary.

At the site and practical details

How long does a visit to Machu Picchu take?

The allowed time depends on the ticket route and current rules. A guided citadel visit commonly takes about 2–2.5 hours; mountain hikes require extra time.

Can I re-enter Machu Picchu after leaving?

Re-entry is generally not allowed on the same ticket. Check the current entry rules and plan restroom, food and other stops before entering.

Are there toilets or restaurants inside Machu Picchu?

Visitor facilities are outside the entrance. There are no public toilets inside the archaeological circuit, so plan before your timed entry.

What if it rains during my visit?

Visits operate in rain, and weather can change quickly. Bring a lightweight rain layer and protect your phone or camera; follow staff instructions on site.

Can I bring a backpack inside Machu Picchu?

Small daypacks are generally the practical choice, but size and item restrictions can change. Check the current official rules before your visit.
