Tour overview
Pallay Punchu tour at a glance
Pallay Punchu is the new colorful mountain of Cusco: a ridge of sharp, pointed peaks striped in red, yellow, green and purple, rising above the dark waters of the Langui-Layo lake. Its name means "woven poncho" in Quechua, and the pattern of its slopes looks exactly like one. The hike is short, the views are huge, and you will share them with very few people.
Our Cusco team checks the services, timings and availability for your dates and sends the options in a written quote.

Detailed itinerary
Pallay Punchu tour itinerary
Times and services are indicative. Your final schedule is confirmed in your written quote.
3:30 am — Pickup and the drive south
We pick you up at your hotel in Cusco and drive south along the Vilcanota River, past Urcos, Checacupe and Combapata, toward Sicuani. Before Sicuani the road turns off into the high plains of Canas province, a land of stone-walled villages, potato fields and alpaca herds at about 3,900 m. Breakfast is served on the way or at the trailhead, depending on the group's timing, while your guide gives a short briefing on the hike and the altitude.
8:00 am — Langui-Layo lake and the trailhead
The last stretch of road follows the shore of Langui-Layo, one of the largest lakes in the Cusco region, with views of the snow-capped peaks beyond. The trailhead is above the village of Layo, where the community manages access to the mountain and the entrance fee is paid.
8:30 am — The hike to Pallay Punchu
The trail, marked with white arrows painted on the rocks, starts gently across grassland where llamas and alpacas graze, then climbs steeply for the final section. Walk slowly and drink water; your guide carries emergency oxygen and a first-aid kit. At the top, the peaks of Pallay Punchu rise in jagged, pyramid-like shapes, with stripes of red, ochre, cream and green formed by mineral layers and eroded over millions of years. Below you, the lake shines dark blue in the high plains.
10:30 am — Time at the summit and the descent
You have time to take photos from several viewpoints along the ridge, rest and enjoy the silence. Your guide explains the geology of the mountain and the importance of the local apus, the sacred mountains of the Andean communities. Then you walk back down the same trail to the van.
1:00 pm — Lunch on the way back
The van drives back toward the Vilcanota valley, and lunch is served in a local restaurant on the way, with vegetarian options.
5:30 pm — Back in Cusco
The road returns through the Vilcanota valley to your hotel in Cusco.

Frequently asked questions
Pallay Punchu tour FAQs
What is Pallay Punchu?
A group of steep, pointed peaks in the Layo district of Canas province, south of Cusco. Layers of minerals color their slopes red, yellow, green and purple, and locals compare the pattern to a woven poncho, which is what 'pallay punchu' means in Quechua.
Pallay Punchu or Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)?
Vinicunca is higher and far busier. Pallay Punchu has a shorter hike, dramatic pointed shapes and the Langui-Layo lake below, with very few visitors, but the drive is longer.
How hard is the hike?
The hike is short, about 3 km round trip, but the last section is steep and the summit is at about 4,700 m. Walk slowly and spend at least 2 days in Cusco before the tour.
Is Pallay Punchu worth the long drive?
For travelers who want a colorful mountain without the crowds, yes. The drive crosses the high plains of Canas, with villages, herds and lakes along the way.
What if the weather is bad?
Your guide may adjust the route or timing for safety. If the trail cannot be done, we offer another date or an alternative tour.
What time does the tour start?
Pickup is at 3:30–4:00 am, with about 4 hours of driving each way, so it is a full day of about 14 hours. Bring snacks and a neck pillow for the van.
What is included?
Hotel pickup, round-trip transport in a tourist van, an English-speaking guide, breakfast and lunch, the community entrance fee, a walking stick on request, emergency oxygen and a first-aid kit.
